The Marquette Iron Range is a deposit of iron ore located in Marquette County, Michigan in the United States. The towns of Ishpeming and Negaunee developed as a result of mining this deposit. A smaller counterpart of Minnesota's Mesabi Range, this is one of two iron ranges in the Lake Superior basin that are in active production as of 2018.
Michigan iron ore is found as isolated masses in a Huronian rock called iron formation. Iron formation is a banded sedimentary rock commonly composed of layers of silica (the mineral of sand and ), alternating with layers of iron minerals. Such rock is found only in very old rocks, the Precambrian (fig. 3).
In 1844, government surveyors were exploring rugged, lake-filled terrain near Negaunee, Michigan, when they notd their compasses swung erratically in certain areas. It did not take long to determine why: ancient Precambrian rock layers in the area were laced with bands of iron ore.

Michigan iron ore came from two active mines on the Marquette Iron Range: the Tilden Mine, and the Empire Mine, both operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. In 2014, the two mines produced 12.1 million tons of pelletized iron ore concentrate. In 2016 the Empire Mine was shutdown.
